Accreditation
Laurens Academy is accredited by the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA). SCISA reviews this accreditation every three years. The relationship with SCISA opens many doors of Academy and provides strict standards which the school must maintain. Our former Director and Founder, Til Culbertson, is the recipient of the 1997 Dr. Charles Aimar Educational Leadership Award given annually by SCISA.
Organization
Laurens Academy is organized under a Board of Directors consisting of parents, church, and community members. The Headmaster oversees the daily operations of the school and reports to the Board of Directors on a monthly basis. The school is recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization under the United States Federal Income Tax Service.
School History
Laurens Academy began in the fall of 1994 with ten fifth grade students meeting in the fellowship hall of Todd Memorial Presbyterian Church. The school was started by a group of concerned parents and educators who had a vision for Laurens County to have the same educational options that were available across our state and nation. Laurens Academy attained its initial accreditation with the South Carolona Independent School Association (SCISA) in 1995. In 1996/1997 the school relocated to its present 20-acre campus where it now offers K4 through the twelfth grade. Laurens Academy is now proud to serve families from Laurens, Greenville, Spartanburg, Union, Newberry, and Greenwood Counties.
In the fall of 1997, an overnight fire consumed one of the classroom buildings which also housed the school library. This forced the school board to quickly make a decision about the future of the school. A capital campaign was begun and the present 25,000 square feet gymnasium/classroom building was erected by Bagwell Builders. What was an unfortunate event in the school's history became the turning point toward a bright future.
In the last several years an additonal 20-acre tract above the school was purchased to build football and softball fields and to also provide room for future expansion of the campus. In the fall of 2005, the school celebrated by burning the note on this property.
The original class from 1994/1995 became the school's first graduating class of eighteen in 2002. The commencement ceremonies took place at Edmunds Hall at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. The 2002 keynote address was presented by Larry Watt, from SCISA. Each year this dignified ceremony has become a tradition on the Presbyterian College campus. Laurens Academy now boasts over 100 graduates.
